A food truck owner in New York is accused of deceiving immigrants out of their life savings to support an extravagant lifestyle, according to the district attorney’s office.
Allegations of Fraud and Misuse of Funds
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced that the operator, identified as 42-year-old Luis Morales, allegedly promised to help immigrants secure food truck permits and start their own businesses. Instead, prosecutors claim Morales took their money and used it for personal expenses, including luxury items and travel.
Details of the Alleged Scheme
Authorities allege that Morales targeted individuals seeking to enter the food truck industry, offering assistance with permits and business setup. According to the DA’s office, Morales collected thousands of dollars from at least 10 victims between 2019 and 2022, but failed to deliver on his promises.
Prosecutors state that instead of using the funds as intended, Morales spent the money on designer clothing, high-end electronics, and vacations. The district attorney’s office reported that the victims, many of whom were recent immigrants, lost significant sums of money intended for their new businesses.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Morales faces charges including grand larceny and scheme to defraud. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office emphasized the impact on the victims, noting that the alleged actions deprived them of opportunities to build stable livelihoods.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated, “This defendant allegedly preyed on hardworking immigrants, stealing their life savings and shattering their dreams of business ownership.”
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation remains active, with authorities encouraging anyone who believes they may have been affected to come forward. The district attorney’s office is working to identify additional victims and gather further evidence.
