Abdirahman Kahin, the entrepreneur behind Afro Deli, has opened a new upscale restaurant at the intersection of Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis. The establishment, named Afro Grill, marks a new direction for Kahin, who is known for his fast-casual Afro Deli locations in the Twin Cities.
New Restaurant Concept
Afro Grill began welcoming guests earlier this month. The restaurant features a menu that blends East African and Mediterranean influences, offering dishes such as lamb shank, grilled fish, and a variety of vegetarian options. The dining room is designed with contemporary decor and seats approximately 80 guests.
Location and Community Impact
The restaurant occupies a prominent corner at Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue, an area that has seen significant redevelopment efforts since 2020. Kahin stated that he chose the location to contribute to the revitalization of the neighborhood and to provide a new dining experience for local residents.
Entrepreneurial Background
Kahin launched the first Afro Deli in 2010 and has since expanded to several locations across Minneapolis and St. Paul. He was named Minnesota’s Small Business Person of the Year in 2023. With Afro Grill, Kahin aims to introduce a higher-end dining option while maintaining the community-focused approach that has defined his previous ventures.
Future Plans
Kahin indicated that if Afro Grill is successful, he may consider opening additional locations or expanding the menu further. For now, he is focused on establishing the restaurant as a destination for both local diners and visitors to the area.
