Alaska Airlines has revealed plans to broaden its international network with new service to Europe and to invest in upgraded airport lounge facilities for its passengers.
New Transatlantic Route to London
The airline will introduce a new nonstop route from Seattle to London Heathrow, with flights scheduled to begin on May 3, 2024. This addition marks Alaska Airlines’ first direct service to Europe, expanding its international reach beyond North America.
According to Alaska Airlines, the new route will operate daily, utilizing Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft through a partnership with British Airways. The collaboration is part of the Oneworld alliance, of which Alaska Airlines is a member.
Enhanced Lounge Investments
In addition to the new route, Alaska Airlines has announced increased investment in its airport lounges. The airline plans to renovate its flagship lounge at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and to open a new lounge location at Portland International Airport in 2025.
Alaska Airlines stated that the Seattle lounge will undergo a comprehensive redesign, aimed at improving comfort and amenities for travelers. The new Portland lounge will offer expanded seating, upgraded food and beverage options, and additional workspace for guests.
Statements from Airline Executives
Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci commented, “Expanding our global reach and enhancing the travel experience for our guests are top priorities. The new London service and our lounge investments reflect our commitment to delivering more value and convenience.”
Minicucci also noted that the airline’s partnership with British Airways and membership in the Oneworld alliance will provide customers with increased connectivity and benefits when traveling internationally.
Oneworld Alliance and International Growth
Alaska Airlines joined the Oneworld alliance in 2021, enabling its passengers to access a broader network of international destinations and reciprocal loyalty benefits. The new London route is expected to strengthen the airline’s position within the alliance and provide additional options for travelers departing from the Pacific Northwest.
Future Plans
The airline indicated that further international expansion may be considered in the future, as Alaska Airlines continues to evaluate opportunities to serve new destinations and enhance its offerings for customers.
