This shift is reflected in the growing popularity of private tours, invitation-only events, and behind-the-scenes experiences. According to a 2023 report by Virtuoso, a global network of luxury travel advisors, demand for exclusive access has increased by 34% over the past two years.

Travel companies are responding to this trend by curating experiences that go beyond conventional luxury. For example, Black Tomato, a bespoke travel agency, offers clients the opportunity to dine with local chefs in remote locations or participate in conservation projects with wildlife experts.
“Our clients are looking for something that feels truly special and unattainable,” said Tom Marchant, co-founder of Black Tomato. “They want to come home with stories that no one else can tell.”
Membership Models and Invitation-Only Clubs
The rise of invitation-only travel clubs and membership-based services further illustrates the value placed on access. Companies such as PRIOR and Indagare provide members with entry to private events, exclusive itineraries, and insider knowledge that is not available to the general public.
“It’s about creating a sense of belonging to a community that has privileged access,” explained Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder of Indagare. “Our members appreciate the feeling of being in the know.”
Technology’s Role in Facilitating Access
Advancements in technology are also enabling new forms of exclusivity. Digital platforms now connect travelers with local experts, offer real-time recommendations, and facilitate entry to hard-to-reach destinations. These innovations are making it possible for luxury travelers to customize their experiences to an unprecedented degree.

As the luxury travel economy continues to evolve, industry observers expect access to remain the defining feature of high-end travel. “The future of luxury is not about what you can buy, but what you can experience,” said Dusek. “Access is the new currency.”
