Ocean City is progressing with efforts to redevelop the Wonderland Pier property, moving closer to transforming the amusement park site into a hotel.
During a recent meeting, the city council introduced an ordinance that would permit the construction of a hotel at the location of the former Wonderland Pier. The proposed ordinance would rezone the area, allowing for hotel development where amusement rides once operated.
The Wonderland Pier, a well-known amusement park on the Ocean City Boardwalk, closed in 2022 after more than a century in operation. The site has since remained vacant, prompting city officials to consider new uses for the property.
According to city officials, the proposed hotel would be subject to specific requirements, including a minimum of 100 rooms and the inclusion of retail or restaurant space on the ground floor. The ordinance also outlines design standards intended to ensure the building fits with the character of the Boardwalk area.
Mayor Jay Gillian stated, “This is an opportunity to bring new life to a key part of the Boardwalk and to support the local economy.” He emphasized that the redevelopment could generate jobs and attract more visitors to the city.
The ordinance is scheduled for a public hearing and possible final adoption at the council’s next meeting. If approved, the measure would pave the way for developers to submit formal proposals for the hotel project.
Some residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact of a hotel on traffic and the Boardwalk’s atmosphere. City officials have indicated that any development would be subject to planning board review and public input before moving forward.
