BMW has introduced its latest 7 Series, which includes an all-electric i7 model boasting a range of up to 452 miles on a single charge, alongside a suite of new luxury technologies. The flagship sedan was revealed on Tuesday, marking a significant update for the brand’s top-tier model.
Electric i7 Leads the Lineup
The new 7 Series lineup is headlined by the i7 xDrive60, BMW’s fully electric luxury sedan. According to BMW, the i7 is capable of traveling up to 452 miles on the WLTP cycle, positioning it among the longest-range electric vehicles currently available. The i7’s dual-motor setup delivers 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 4.7 seconds.
Expanded Engine Options
In addition to the i7, the 7 Series will be offered with a selection of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, depending on the market. The range includes a 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel, both paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Plug-in hybrid variants are expected to arrive in 2023, with BMW stating that these models will offer an electric-only range of up to 50 miles.
Innovative Interior and Technology Features
The new 7 Series introduces several advanced features, including a 31.3-inch 8K rear entertainment screen called the BMW Theatre Screen. This display, which folds down from the roof, allows rear passengers to stream content via Amazon Fire TV. The sedan also features BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system, a curved digital display, and a range of new driver assistance technologies.
Design and Dimensions
The updated 7 Series adopts a bold exterior design with a prominent kidney grille and split headlight arrangement. The vehicle measures 5,391 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,544 mm in height, making it larger than its predecessor. BMW states that the new model offers increased rear legroom and enhanced comfort for passengers.
Production and Availability
Production of the new 7 Series will take place at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, with global deliveries scheduled to begin in November 2022. Pricing for the i7 xDrive60 in the UK starts at £107,400, while other variants will be priced according to market and specifications.
