Plans for the redevelopment of Baltimore’s Harborplace were announced on Wednesday, featuring a luxury hotel and residential units with monthly rents reaching up to $7,000. The proposal, presented by developer MCB Real Estate, outlines a significant transformation of the Inner Harbor’s iconic waterfront pavilions.
Project Details and Vision
MCB Real Estate’s vision for Harborplace includes constructing a 200-room luxury hotel and approximately 900 residential apartments. According to the plans, some of the apartments are expected to command rents as high as $7,000 per month. The redevelopment also calls for the demolition of the existing pavilions, which would be replaced with new buildings designed to integrate retail, dining, and entertainment spaces.
Public Spaces and Community Features
The proposal emphasizes the creation of public spaces, including a new park and an amphitheater. The developers stated that these features are intended to make the waterfront more accessible and inviting for both residents and visitors. The project also aims to improve pedestrian access to the waterfront and enhance the overall experience at the Inner Harbor.
Timeline and Next Steps
MCB Real Estate indicated that the project would be developed in phases, with the first phase potentially beginning in 2025. The company stated that it would seek community input and work with city officials as the plans progress. The redevelopment is subject to approval by the Baltimore City Council and other regulatory bodies.
Background and Context
Harborplace, which opened in 1980, has long been a central feature of Baltimore’s downtown waterfront. In recent years, the property has experienced declining foot traffic and vacancies. The proposed redevelopment is part of a broader effort to revitalize the Inner Harbor and attract new visitors and residents to the area.
