Hanoi’s longest-standing luxury hotel is experiencing increased competition as a wave of new high-end properties opens in the city, coinciding with a notable rise in tourist arrivals.
Historic Hotel Navigates Changing Market
The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, which has been in operation since 1901, is encountering challenges from a growing number of luxury hotels entering the Vietnamese capital. This comes as Hanoi sees a surge in international visitors, with tourism numbers rebounding after pandemic-related declines.
Tourism Growth Fuels Hotel Expansion
According to official data, Hanoi welcomed 2.2 million foreign tourists in the first five months of 2024, representing a 53% increase compared to the same period last year. The city’s Department of Tourism attributes this growth to relaxed visa policies and expanded international flight connections.
In response to rising demand, several international hotel brands have launched new properties in Hanoi. These include the Capella Hanoi, the Four Seasons Hotel Hanoi at Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Fairmont Hanoi, all of which have opened or announced plans to open since 2022.
Metropole Hanoi Maintains Its Position
Despite the influx of competitors, the Metropole Hanoi continues to attract guests with its blend of French colonial architecture and modern amenities. The hotel’s general manager, William Haandrikman, stated, “We are proud of our heritage and continue to offer unique experiences that set us apart.”
The hotel has hosted numerous notable guests over its long history, including heads of state and celebrities. Its management says it remains committed to preserving its legacy while adapting to evolving guest expectations.
Industry Perspectives
Industry analysts note that the increased competition is likely to benefit Hanoi’s hospitality sector by encouraging higher service standards and greater diversity in accommodation options. However, they also point out that established hotels like the Metropole must continue to innovate to maintain their market share.
Outlook for Hanoi’s Luxury Hospitality Sector
With international arrivals expected to continue rising, the luxury hotel market in Hanoi is projected to remain competitive. The city’s tourism authorities anticipate further growth as more travelers choose Vietnam as a destination.
