Explora Journeys, the luxury cruise division of MSC Group, is evaluating opportunities to broaden its operations into Asia and the river cruise sector, while also contemplating the possibility of expanding its fleet beyond the current six ships on order.
Potential Entry into Asian Markets
Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys, indicated that the company is assessing the Asian market as a future destination for its vessels. “Asia is on our radar,” Ungerer stated, noting that the region presents significant potential for the brand’s luxury offerings. He added that the company is carefully monitoring developments in Asia to determine the optimal timing for entry.
Interest in River Cruising
Ungerer also revealed that Explora Journeys is exploring the river cruise segment. “We are looking at rivers as a possible next step,” he said, emphasizing that the company is considering various options to diversify its product range. However, Ungerer clarified that no final decisions have been made regarding river cruise operations.
Fleet Expansion Plans
Currently, Explora Journeys has six ships either under construction or on order. Ungerer mentioned that the company is open to increasing its fleet size beyond these six vessels. “We are not limiting ourselves to six ships,” he explained, suggesting that additional orders may be placed if market conditions support further growth. The company’s first ship, Explora I, launched in 2023, with Explora II expected to join the fleet in 2024.
Strategic Approach to Growth
Ungerer emphasized that Explora Journeys is taking a measured approach to expansion, focusing on maintaining high standards of service and guest experience. He noted that any decisions regarding new markets or fleet additions will be made in alignment with the company’s long-term vision.
