As the Caribbean enters hurricane season, travel advisors are implementing strategies to support clients and minimize disruptions to travel plans. The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, brings increased uncertainty for travelers heading to the region.
Preparation and Communication
Travel advisors emphasize the importance of preparation and clear communication with clients. “We make sure our clients are aware of the risks associated with traveling during hurricane season,” said Jennifer Doncsecz, president of VIP Vacations. She noted that her team provides detailed information about the potential for storms and the importance of flexibility in travel arrangements.
Advisors often recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers weather-related disruptions. “We always suggest comprehensive travel insurance, especially during hurricane season,” said Doncsecz. She explained that insurance can help protect clients from unexpected expenses if a storm impacts their trip.
Monitoring Storm Activity
Staying informed about developing weather systems is a key part of advisors’ approach. “We monitor the National Hurricane Center and other reliable sources for updates,” said Karen Malone, owner of Travel Leaders in Palm Coast, Florida. Malone explained that advisors keep clients updated on potential storms that could affect their destinations.
When a storm threatens, advisors work quickly to adjust travel plans. “If a hurricane is forecasted, we contact our clients immediately to discuss options,” Malone said. These options may include rescheduling flights, changing accommodations, or postponing trips altogether.
Flexibility with Suppliers
Travel advisors also rely on their relationships with airlines, hotels, and tour operators to secure flexible policies for clients. “Many suppliers offer waivers or flexible rebooking policies during hurricane season,” said Doncsecz. She noted that these policies can make it easier for travelers to change plans without incurring additional costs.
Malone added that advisors advocate on behalf of their clients when negotiating with suppliers. “We work to ensure our clients receive the best possible outcome, whether that means a refund, a credit, or a new travel date,” she said.
Advice for Travelers
Advisors recommend that travelers remain flexible and stay informed throughout hurricane season. “It’s important to have a backup plan and to be prepared for changes,” said Doncsecz. She also advised travelers to register with the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and assistance while abroad.
