Explora Journeys has reached a significant milestone with the simultaneous construction of three ships at Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, as the brand’s six-vessel ultra-luxury fleet continues to take shape.
Three Ships Under Construction
The company recently marked the float out of EXPLORA II at the Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa. This event was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, and Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. The float out ceremony represents a key stage in the shipbuilding process, as the vessel is moved from dry dock to water for the first time.
EXPLORA II is scheduled to enter service in August 2024. The ship will operate in the Mediterranean, offering a range of itineraries before heading to the Caribbean for the winter season.
Progress on EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV
Simultaneously, construction continues on EXPLORA III at the Monfalcone shipyard. This vessel is expected to be delivered in 2026 and will be the first in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). LNG propulsion is intended to reduce emissions and support the company’s sustainability objectives.
Work is also underway on EXPLORA IV, which is being built at the Sestri Ponente yard. This ship is anticipated to join the fleet in 2027, further expanding the company’s presence in the luxury cruise market.
Six-Ship Fleet Vision
The six-ship fleet is part of Explora Journeys’ long-term strategy to offer a refined and environmentally conscious cruising experience. The brand’s inaugural vessel, EXPLORA I, entered service in July 2023. The remaining ships, including EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI, are planned for delivery by 2028.
According to Explora Journeys, the new ships will feature advanced environmental technologies, including selective catalytic reduction systems, shore power capabilities, and underwater noise management to minimize their impact on marine life.
Statements from Leadership
Pierfrancesco Vago stated, “The float out of EXPLORA II and the ongoing construction of EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV demonstrate our commitment to growing our ultra-luxury fleet and investing in sustainable maritime technology.”
Pierroberto Folgiero added, “This triple milestone highlights the strong partnership between Fincantieri and Explora Journeys, as well as our shared focus on innovation and environmental responsibility.”
Future Plans
Explora Journeys aims to deliver a total of six ships by 2028, with each vessel designed to provide guests with a high level of comfort, personalized service, and environmentally conscious features.
