Raines has completed the transformation of a century-old firehouse into a boutique hotel, aiming to combine hospitality with a mission-driven approach. The property, located in the heart of Florence, South Carolina, now operates as The Firehouse, a hotel that seeks to provide guests with a unique experience while supporting local community initiatives.
Historic Building Repurposed
The building, originally constructed in 1907, served as a fire station for over 70 years before being decommissioned. Raines undertook extensive renovations to preserve the structure’s historic character, maintaining original architectural features such as exposed brick walls and antique firehouse doors. The project also included modern upgrades to guest rooms and common areas to meet contemporary standards.
Mission-Driven Hospitality
The Firehouse hotel integrates a purpose-driven mission into its operations. According to Raines, a portion of the hotel’s profits will be allocated to local nonprofit organizations and community programs. “We wanted to create a space that not only honors the building’s history but also gives back to the community,” said David Tart, managing partner at Raines.
Guest Experience and Amenities
The boutique hotel features 18 guest rooms, each designed to reflect the building’s heritage while offering modern comforts. Amenities include a communal lounge, a rooftop terrace, and meeting spaces for events. The property’s central location provides guests with convenient access to downtown Florence’s shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
Community Engagement
Raines has partnered with several local organizations to support ongoing community engagement efforts. The hotel plans to host events and initiatives that promote local art, culture, and social causes. “Our goal is to be more than just a place to stay—we want to be a catalyst for positive change in Florence,” Tart added.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Raines intends to expand its mission-driven hospitality model to other properties in the region. The company is exploring opportunities to repurpose additional historic buildings and further integrate community-focused initiatives into its business operations.
