The Pentagon allocated approximately $50 billion on high-end food and other luxury items in the final weeks leading up to the end of the fiscal year, according to findings released by a government watchdog group.
Watchdog Highlights Year-End Spending Surge
OpenTheBooks, a nonprofit organization that tracks government expenditures, reported that the Department of Defense significantly increased its purchases of premium products as the September 30 fiscal year deadline approached. The group’s analysis indicated a notable rise in spending on items such as lobster, snow crab, and other luxury foods during this period.
Details of Purchases
According to the report, the Pentagon’s expenditures included $4.6 million on lobster tail and snow crab, as well as $2.3 million on crab and other shellfish. The watchdog also noted purchases of high-end equipment and supplies, including $1.7 million spent on golf carts and $1.2 million on standing desks.
Patterns of Year-End Expenditures
OpenTheBooks stated that the Department of Defense’s spending patterns are consistent with a broader trend among federal agencies to use remaining funds before the fiscal year concludes. The group’s analysis found that the Pentagon’s spending in the final week of the fiscal year was five times higher than average weekly expenditures during the rest of the year.
Official Response
The Department of Defense did not provide a comment in response to the report’s findings. OpenTheBooks has called for increased transparency and oversight of year-end government spending.
