InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the return of the InterContinental brand to Manila, marking a significant development for the hospitality sector in the Philippines. The move brings back the world’s first and largest luxury hotel brand to the capital, following the closure of the previous InterContinental Manila in 2015.
IHG to Open New InterContinental Property in Makati
The new InterContinental Manila is set to open in Makati, the city’s central business district. The upcoming hotel will be located within the One Ayala Avenue development, a mixed-use complex that includes office spaces, retail outlets, and transport facilities. The property is expected to offer 300 rooms and suites, catering to both business and leisure travelers.
Partnership with Ayala Land
IHG is collaborating with Ayala Land, one of the Philippines’ leading property developers, for the new InterContinental Manila. The partnership aims to deliver a luxury hospitality experience that aligns with the evolving needs of local and international guests. The hotel will feature a range of amenities, including multiple dining options, event spaces, and wellness facilities.
Significance of the InterContinental Brand’s Return
The reintroduction of the InterContinental brand to Manila is seen as a milestone for IHG and the Philippine hospitality industry. The original InterContinental Manila, which operated for over four decades, was regarded as a landmark in the city. The new property is expected to build on this legacy, offering contemporary luxury while honoring the brand’s heritage.
Statements from IHG and Ayala Land
Rajit Sukumaran, Managing Director for South East Asia and Korea at IHG, stated, “We are delighted to bring the InterContinental brand back to Manila, a city with a rich history and vibrant culture. Our partnership with Ayala Land will allow us to create a world-class destination for travelers.”
Ayala Land President and CEO Bernard Vincent Dy commented, “The return of InterContinental to Makati underscores our commitment to enhancing the city’s hospitality landscape. We look forward to welcoming guests to a new era of luxury and service.”
Projected Opening and Future Prospects
The new InterContinental Manila is scheduled to open in 2028. The hotel is anticipated to contribute to the city’s tourism and business sectors, providing high-end accommodation and services in a prime location. IHG’s expansion in the Philippines reflects growing confidence in the country’s travel and hospitality market.
