The Hotel Florence, a landmark in Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood, is set to undergo redevelopment, with plans to establish it as a boutique hotel, dining destination, and performing arts venue.
Restoration Project Announced
Officials revealed on Thursday that the historic Hotel Florence, located at 11111 S. Forrestville Ave., will be restored and repurposed. The project aims to revitalize the 1881 structure, which has been closed to the public for decades, into a multi-use facility that will serve both visitors and the local community.
Details of the Redevelopment
The redevelopment plan includes the creation of a boutique hotel with 25 rooms, a restaurant, and a performing arts space. The project is being led by the Pullman National Monument Preservation Society in partnership with the National Park Service and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
“Our vision is to bring new life to the Hotel Florence, making it a vibrant center for hospitality, dining, and the arts,” said David Doig, president of the Pullman National Monument Preservation Society.
Historical Significance
Constructed in 1881 by industrialist George Pullman, the Hotel Florence originally served as a luxury accommodation for visitors and executives of the Pullman Palace Car Company. The building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been closed since 2000 due to structural issues and funding challenges.
Community Impact
Local leaders and preservationists believe the restoration will contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the Pullman neighborhood. The project is expected to generate new jobs and attract tourism to the area, which was designated a National Monument in 2015.
“This redevelopment will honor the legacy of the Pullman community while providing new opportunities for residents and visitors,” said Alderman Anthony Beale of Chicago’s 9th Ward.
Funding and Timeline
The restoration is estimated to cost $20 million, with funding provided by a combination of public and private sources. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the hotel and other amenities anticipated to open in 2027.
