Plans to develop a high-end restaurant and bar at the Sandbanks Yacht Company have sparked significant opposition from local residents and community groups.
Community Concerns Raised
The proposal, submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, outlines the construction of a two-storey venue with a rooftop terrace on the site of the existing yacht club, located on the Sandbanks peninsula. The application has prompted objections from individuals who argue that the development could increase noise, traffic, and parking issues in the area.
One resident commented, “This is a quiet residential area and a large restaurant and bar will bring late-night noise and disruption.” Others have voiced worries about the potential impact on the local environment and the character of Sandbanks, which is known for its beaches and residential properties.
Details of the Development Plan
The proposed establishment would feature indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a rooftop bar, and a private function room. According to the planning documents, the venue aims to attract both club members and the general public, offering views across Poole Harbour. The application states that the development would create new jobs and support the local economy.
The Sandbanks Yacht Company, which has operated at the site for over a century, maintains that the new facility would modernize its offerings and help secure its future. The company’s spokesperson said, “We are committed to working with the community to address concerns and ensure the project benefits everyone.”
Objections and Support
More than 150 formal objections have been submitted to BCP Council, with many citing fears about increased congestion and the potential for antisocial behaviour. Some residents have also questioned whether the scale of the project is appropriate for the location.
However, a number of supporters have written in favour of the proposal, arguing that it would enhance amenities in the area and provide a boost to local businesses. One supporter wrote, “A quality restaurant and bar would be an asset to Sandbanks and attract visitors year-round.”
Next Steps in the Planning Process
BCP Council is currently reviewing the application and considering feedback from the public. A decision is expected to be made in the coming months. The full planning application and associated documents can be viewed on the council’s planning portal.
