A Berlin‑based startup, Nox Mobility, has unveiled plans for an expansive network of all‑private‑room sleeper trainsacross Europe, aiming to launch its first services in 2027 with ambitions to connect more than 100 cities by 2035
🚄 Who’s Behind the Project?
Nox was co‑founded by Thibault Constant, known online as “Simply Railway” with over half a million followers and 400+ night‑train journeys under his belt, and Janek Smalla, former operations lead at FlixTrain and Bolt Germany.
What’s on Board: Private Cabins at Competitive Prices
Passengers can choose from three cabin types:
- Single Loft: upper‑level bed, seat and table, ideal for solo travellers
- Double Loft: double upper bed, two seats and table for pairs
- Double Vista: lower beds convertible to seating, easy entry, window views in some units
All cabins feature 2‑metre beds, dedicated luggage storage, space to stand, and in select cabins, panoramic windows.
Fares That Rival Flights
Nox plans to offer fares competitive with budget airline prices:
- Single cabin from €79
- Double cabin from €149
This pricing model leans on strict standardisation and operational efficiency, allowing Nox to serve 35 initial routes while keeping costs in check.
Route Network: From 35 to 100 Cities
- First phase (by 2027): ~35 routes linking major hubs such as Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Vienna, Budapest, Warsaw, and Stockholm.
- Long‑term goal: Expand to over 100 European cities by 2035.
Why It Matters
- Privacy and comfort: every traveller gets a private cabin—no shared berths with strangers
- Sustainability: trains emit far less carbon than short‑haul flights and begin/end in city centres
- Accessibility: cabins and facilities are being designed with accessibility in mind
Current Progress & Booking Options
Nox is currently finalising cabin designs ahead of a major financing round planned for autumn 2025. The company has already reserved train coaches and is developing route plans and timetables via its website, where travellers can join the Early Bird Club for updates, discounts, and early booking access.
More Night‑Train Options in Europe
Although Nox offers an ambitious new alternative, other providers such as Europe Sleeper and ÖBB’s Nightjet are already operating sleeper services:
- Europe Sleeper runs a Brussels–Prague route (via Amsterdam & Berlin) and seasonal services to Innsbruck and Venice. An Amsterdam–Barcelona night train is planned for 2026–2027, but has faced delays, especially due to French infrastructure negotiations.
- ÖBB Nightjet, Austria’s federal overnight service, connects countries including Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium, offering standard berth, couchette, and sleeper cabins. Its newer Nightjet 2.0 coaches roll out as of December 2023.
