A prominent building that once formed part of the Dan River Mills complex in Danville, Virginia, has reopened following extensive renovations, now serving as a boutique hotel.
Transformation of a Landmark
The former textile mill building, located at 528 Craghead Street, has been converted into The Bee Hotel. The property features 47 guest rooms, a restaurant, and event spaces, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Danville’s River District.
Preserving History
Originally constructed in 1899, the building was part of the Dan River Mills, which played a central role in the city’s economic development for more than a century. The mill closed in 2006, and the site has since been the focus of redevelopment efforts.
Community and Economic Impact
Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones described the reopening as a “major step forward” for the community. “This project honors our past while creating new opportunities for our future,” Jones said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.
The hotel’s opening is expected to boost tourism and provide new jobs in the area. According to city officials, the project created more than 30 permanent positions and is anticipated to attract visitors to the downtown district.
Renovation and Investment
The redevelopment was led by developer Rick Barker Properties, with support from the city and state historic tax credits. The project involved a $12 million investment, according to the company.
“We wanted to preserve the character of the building while giving it new life,” said Rick Barker, president of Rick Barker Properties. “It’s rewarding to see the community embrace this transformation.”
Continuing Revitalization Efforts
The opening of The Bee Hotel is part of a broader initiative to redevelop the River District, which has seen more than $300 million in public and private investment over the past decade. City leaders hope the hotel’s success will encourage further development in the area.
