A sandcastle artist who has been a familiar presence at a California beach for nearly two decades has been told to vacate the area by a nearby luxury hotel.
Sand Sculptor’s Departure After Years of Work
For almost 20 years, Kirk Rademaker has been creating elaborate sand sculptures on the beach in front of the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay. His work has become a well-known attraction for both residents and tourists. However, Rademaker recently shared that the hotel has requested he stop building his sandcastles on the property’s beachfront.
Hotel’s Statement on the Decision
The Ritz-Carlton confirmed that it asked Rademaker to leave, citing concerns related to safety and liability. In a statement, the hotel said, “We appreciate Mr. Rademaker’s artistry and the joy it has brought to our guests and the community. However, we must prioritize the safety and well-being of all visitors.”
Community Response to Artist’s Removal
Local residents and visitors have expressed disappointment over the hotel’s decision. Many have enjoyed watching Rademaker’s sand sculptures over the years and consider his work an important part of the beach’s character. Some community members have voiced their support for Rademaker on social media and called for the hotel to reconsider its position.
Artist’s Reaction and Future Plans
Rademaker stated that he is saddened by the outcome but understands the hotel’s concerns. He mentioned he is exploring other locations where he can continue his sand sculpting. “It’s been a privilege to share my art with so many people here,” Rademaker said. “I hope to find a new place where I can keep building and inspiring others.”
