When the Explora I set sail last summer, it introduced a new approach to luxury cruising, aiming to blur the line between a high-end hotel and a traditional ocean liner. The vessel, operated by Explora Journeys, seeks to attract travelers who might not have previously considered a cruise, offering amenities and design elements more commonly associated with boutique hotels.
Redefining the Cruise Experience
The Explora I features 461 suites, each with a private terrace, and interiors designed by the London-based firm De Jorio Luxury & Yachts. The ship’s aesthetic draws inspiration from European resorts, with contemporary furnishings, neutral tones, and an emphasis on spaciousness. Public areas include multiple pools, a spa, and a curated art collection, all intended to evoke the atmosphere of a land-based luxury property.
Culinary Offerings and Onboard Amenities
Dining options on the Explora I include six restaurants, each focusing on a distinct culinary tradition, from Mediterranean to Pan-Asian cuisine. The ship also offers a selection of bars and lounges, as well as a chef’s kitchen for cooking classes and private events. According to Explora Journeys, the goal is to provide a gastronomic experience comparable to that of leading hotels and resorts.
Targeting a New Demographic
Explora Journeys is positioning the Explora I to appeal to travelers who value privacy, design, and personalized service. The company reports that a significant portion of its guests are new to cruising, with many drawn by the ship’s hotel-like ambiance and flexible itineraries. The line’s approach includes longer port stays and overnight visits, allowing guests to explore destinations in greater depth.
Future Plans and Expansion
The Explora I is the first of six planned ships for Explora Journeys, with the next vessel, Explora II, scheduled to debut in 2024. The company states that it will continue to refine its concept, incorporating feedback from guests and further integrating elements of luxury hospitality into its offerings.
