The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) has raised concerns regarding a recent modification by American Express to its cruise credit program, which the organization says excludes travel advisors from the process.
Policy Update Alters Cruise Credit Distribution
American Express recently announced an adjustment to its cruise credit policy, now providing cardholders with cruise credits directly, bypassing travel advisors. Previously, these credits were accessible to clients booking through travel advisors affiliated with the American Express Travel Representative Network.
ASTA Expresses Disappointment
ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby commented on the development, stating, “We are disappointed by American Express’s decision to remove travel advisors from the cruise credit program.” Kerby added that the change “undermines the value that travel advisors bring to clients and to the cruise industry.”
Advisors Voice Concerns Over Client Impact
Travel advisors have expressed concerns that the updated policy could negatively affect their relationships with clients. Many advisors had previously relied on the cruise credit program as an added benefit for their clients, which they say helped foster loyalty and trust.
American Express Responds to Feedback
In response to inquiries, American Express stated that the new policy is intended to streamline the process for cardholders. The company emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting both cardholders and travel partners, and noted that it continues to offer a range of travel benefits to its members.
ASTA Calls for Reconsideration
Kerby urged American Express to reconsider the policy change, stating, “We encourage American Express to work with the travel advisor community to find a solution that recognizes the important role advisors play in the cruise booking process.”
Industry Response Remains Uncertain
It is not yet clear whether American Express will revisit its decision. ASTA has indicated it will continue to advocate on behalf of travel advisors affected by the policy update.
