A Georgia business leader has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for orchestrating a $380 million Ponzi scheme that financed an extravagant lifestyle, according to court documents.
Details of the Fraudulent Scheme
John Woods, the former CEO of Southport Capital, was convicted for running a fraudulent investment operation that spanned nearly a decade. Prosecutors stated that Woods misled hundreds of investors, many of whom were elderly, by promising stable returns through what he described as safe investments. Instead, authorities said, Woods used new investors’ funds to pay earlier participants, while diverting millions of dollars for personal use.
Lavish Spending and Investor Losses
The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that Woods used the proceeds to purchase luxury vehicles, real estate, and to fund other personal expenses. The scheme resulted in substantial losses for more than 400 investors, with many losing their retirement savings.
Sentencing and Restitution
Woods was sentenced on Thursday in federal court. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to pay restitution to the victims. The court also mandated the forfeiture of assets acquired through the fraudulent scheme.
Statements from Authorities
“This defendant preyed on vulnerable individuals, convincing them their money was safe while he funded his own lavish lifestyle,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “The sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the impact on the victims.”
Further Proceedings
Woods’ legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which previously filed a civil complaint against Woods and Southport Capital.
