Three renowned French luxury hotels have been stripped of their prestigious “Palace” distinction, according to an announcement from the French tourism development agency Atout France.
Hotels Affected by the Decision
The hotels impacted by this change are the Hotel de Crillon and the Hotel Plaza Athénée, both located in Paris, as well as the Hotel Martinez in Cannes. These establishments are no longer included in the exclusive list of “Palace” hotels, a title awarded to select five-star hotels that demonstrate exceptional standards of service, architecture, and heritage.
Criteria and Review Process
The “Palace” label, introduced in 2010, is intended to recognize hotels that exceed the requirements for a five-star rating. The distinction is reviewed every five years by Atout France, which evaluates hotels based on criteria such as service quality, location, and facilities. The latest review resulted in the removal of the designation from the three aforementioned hotels.
Current List of “Palace” Hotels
Following this update, France now has 31 hotels holding the “Palace” status. The full list is available on the Atout France website.
Implications for the Hospitality Sector
The loss of the “Palace” label is considered significant in the hospitality industry, as it is associated with international prestige and can influence guest preferences. The affected hotels have not commented publicly on the decision.
