Le Colonial, a high-end French-Vietnamese dining establishment, is preparing to reopen in New York City after a period of absence. The restaurant, known for its blend of French and Vietnamese cuisine, is scheduled to launch its new location later this year.
The new venue will be located at 95 University Place in Greenwich Village. This marks a return to Manhattan for Le Colonial, which previously operated on East 57th Street for over two decades before closing in 2019. The closure was attributed to the expiration of its lease.
Le Colonial’s co-owner, Rick Wahlstedt, stated that the restaurant’s return to New York is highly anticipated. “We have been searching for the right location and are excited to be back in the city,” Wahlstedt said.
The upcoming Greenwich Village site will occupy a 7,500-square-foot space, featuring a main dining room, a lounge, and a private dining area. The restaurant’s design will draw inspiration from 1920s French Colonial architecture, consistent with its other locations in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and Lake Forest, Illinois.
Le Colonial’s menu will continue to offer its signature dishes, including crispy red snapper, shaking beef, and chicken curry. Executive chef Hassan Obaye, who has led the kitchens at the restaurant’s other locations, will oversee the culinary operations in New York.
Wahlstedt noted that the reopening is expected to generate approximately 80 jobs. The restaurant aims to open its doors by late fall, though an exact date has not been finalized.
